Socio-Economic Realities

Malda: Past and Present

Malda is one of the most socio-economically and educationally disadvantaged districts of West Bengal. According to the 2011 Census, Muslims constitute 51.3% of the district's population, making it one of only two Muslim-majority districts in the state alongside Murshidabad (66.3%). Although Muslims account for nearly 27% of West Bengal's population, they continue to remain among the most marginalized communities in terms of education, employment, and economic well-being.

The report Living Realities of Muslims in West Bengal highlights persistent educational deprivation: only 2.7% of literate Muslims have attained a graduate degree or higher, nearly 15% of children aged 6–14 were out of school, and 9.1% had never been enrolled. With 81% of the community residing in rural areas and 47% working as agricultural or informal wage labourers, high poverty rates, low parental literacy, and shortages of secondary schools create severe transition gaps.

The district literacy rate stands at 61.73%, well below the state average. In Kaluari Village where the campus is established, literacy drops to just 52%. Strengthening infrastructure, teacher training, and financial assistance is essential to breaking this cycle.
